Riots broke out in a temporary camp for migrants near the village of Rudninkai, Shalchininkai region. About it informs police of Lithuania.
The incident occurred on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday. Illegal migrants began to break down the fence in the camp, and several managed to escape. Lithuanian law enforcement officers detained a total of 20 escaped migrants.
In total, the camp near the village of Rudninkai contains about 400 illegal immigrants who came to Lithuania from the territory of Belarus. Initially, the authorities wanted to place up to 1,500 migrants at the landfill, despite the fact that about 500 people live in the village itself. Residents held several protests, and as a result, the authorities decided to reduce the number of illegal immigrants who would be placed in the camp. Now it is expected that there will be about 800 of them.
Since the beginning of the year, over 4.1 thousand illegal migrants have been caught on the border of Lithuania and Belarus. This is 50 times more than in the entire last year. The Lithuanian military is involved in border protection.
Vilnius blames Minsk for the migration crisis. Lithuania is trying to rebuff the actions of Alexander Lukashenko and stop the flow of migrants from the Middle East, who arrive in huge numbers through Belarus. In July, Vilnius was forced to declare an emergency regime. The authorities promise to pay 300 euros each to illegal immigrants who have agreed to voluntarily leave Lithuania and return to their countries.
In a conversation with The Insider, Lithuanian military expert, reserve colonel Vaidotas Malinionis notedthat the Lithuanian authorities need to act as quickly as possible, because Lukashenka has already threatened to use migrants to organize terrorist attacks on the territory of the country.
