Facebook has removed a network of accounts from Russia that spread memes in which people turned into chimpanzees after being vaccinated against COVID-19. About it it says in the company’s June report.
“We have deleted 65 Facebook accounts and 243 Instagram accounts from Russia. We associate them with Fazze, a subsidiary of a UK-based marketing firm that operates primarily from Russia, ”the Facebook report said.
According to the company, the memes “sought to undermine the credibility” of popular Western-made vaccines. In November-December 2020, memes and comments were circulated from blocked accounts, “claiming that AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine would turn humans into chimpanzees.” In May, the Pfizer vaccine was attacked – accounts published a “classified document allegedly obtained by hackers.”
The network was targeted at users in India, Latin America and to a lesser extent the United States, but failed to form a significant audience.
As a reminder, at the end of 2020 Facebook deleted three networks of accounts linked to Russia due to violation of the rules of foreign interference. Earlier it was reported that Facebook and Twitter removed 20 accounts and pages that are linked to the Russian Internet Research Agency, known as the “troll factory”.
As a reminder, Facebook and Twitter have started tagging publications from state-controlled media. In particular, this applies to the publications of Russia Today, Sputnik, Xinhua News and the Philippine News Agency.
