The extremist Taliban movement captured the city of Kunduz in Afghanistan, which is the administrative center of the province of the same name in the north of the country. About it informs BBC with reference to the representative of local authorities.

As the agency notes, the city is of great strategic importance. A representative of the local authorities said that all districts of the city, except for the airport, are under the control of the Taliban, and a flag of the movement has been raised over Kunduz. Fires started in the city.

There are reports of casualties among the civilian population, among the dead – women and children.

In addition, the Taliban announced on the capture of the city of Talukana – the center of the Takhar province in the north-east of the country. Afghan and provincial officials have not yet commented on this statement. On the eve of the terrorist movement captured Shibargan city – the capital of Jowzjan province located in the north of Afghanistan

The Taliban’s offensive has intensified sharply after American troops and their allies began to withdraw their units from Afghanistan after 20 years of military presence in the country of the international coalition. In recent weeks, the Taliban have taken control of many parts of Afghanistan and are now trying to seize major cities and provincial centers.

The Taliban offensive is accompanied by a humanitarian crisis. In the city of Lashkargah, the capital of Helmand province, shops burned down in fierce battles lasting a week. The local population was left without essential goods.

According to the United Nations, in the first six months of 2021 in Afghanistan perished 1659 civilians. 3,524 people were injured.
