Columnist Anna Politkovskaya, known for her investigative journalism, was shot dead on October 7, 2006 in the elevator of her house on Lesnaya Street. The investigation considers the motive for the crime to be dissatisfaction with the professional activities of Politkovskaya.
There were five people in the dock: Lom-Ali Gaitukayev, his nephews Rustam, Ibrahim and Dzhabrail Makhmudov, as well as Sergei Khadzhikurbanov. Gaitukayev, found guilty of organizing the murder, and the killer Rustam Makhmudov were sentenced to life imprisonment. In July 2017, Gaitukayev died in the colony.
The alleged mediator, former police officer Khadzhikurbanov, received 20 years in prison, and the Makhmudov brothers, who followed Politkovskaya, received 12 and 14 years in prison, respectively. Former Moscow police officer Dmitry Pavlyuchenkov, who provided external surveillance of Politkovskaya and transferred information to Gaitukayev for money, was sentenced to 11 years in a strict regime colony.
The criminal case against the unidentified customer of the murder was separated into a separate proceeding.
European Court of Human Rights admittedthat the investigation into the murder of Anna Politkovskaya was not effective: the investigation still did not identify the customer and did not take sufficient measures for a comprehensive and effective investigation of the crime. Many of the evidence and circumstances of the murder led to Chechnya and its high-ranking leaders.
Meanwhile, on October 7, 2021, the statute of limitations for this crime expires.
