American scientists have discovered an immune molecule that can fight not only various variations of SARS-CoV-2, but also other coronaviruses. About it writes Nature magazine.
Biochemists at the Seattle Cancer Research Center said the discovery could help develop a wide range of drugs and vaccines.
Scientists studied 12 antibodies in people infected with either SARS-CoV-2 or its close relative SARS-CoV. One of the molecules, dubbed S2H97, was able to block the entry of a number of variants of SARS-CoV-2 and other sarbecoviruses into cells.
“These are the coolest antibodies that we have identified,” – said one of the scientists, biochemist Tyler Starr.
The study authors noted that a universal antibody is needed as the infection continues to mutate.
