Mikhail Podolyak, Advisor to the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine on Special Issues
This text leaves a very strange aftertaste. The impression is that the author is out of the context of the global agenda and absolutely misunderstands the nature of relations between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. These are two foreign countries that evaluate history and their own place in this history in extremely different ways. Moreover, the key difference between us is that we want to live in completely different types of socio-political relationships.
On the other hand, we in Ukraine are already accustomed to the fact that representatives of one or another ruling generation in Russia simply refuse to understand Ukraine and prefer to use historical clichés that were spread even under Soviet rule. More than thirty years of free historical discussions in post-Soviet countries and the maximum access to historical documents that Mr. Putin has have simply gone to pieces. As if there was no this time and this freedom – everything was wasted. And this article clearly emphasized the main thing – in the Russian Federation they did not understand what Ukraine is. And this misunderstanding, ignorance gives rise to fear among the Russian elite, which in turn requires a kind of “final decision”. And this final decision, alas, manifests itself in various types of aggression, including direct large-scale hostilities.
Of course, Ukraine does not expect the truth from the Russian leadership, and even more so a deep understanding of our historical differences. If the Russian leader considers it necessary to waste his time on such strange things as the production of lengthy and thoroughly propaganda articles, then this is undoubtedly his right. But historical responsibility before the fate of our peoples – Ukrainian and Russian – requires a completely different activity and attention to other things. To things that are relevant today.
The longer the war between Russia and Ukraine lasts – let’s call a spade a spade – the longer it will take to write texts for the Kremlin’s website in order to substantiate your propaganda interpretation of history. To justify their own aggressive actions and, one way or another, to compensate for their own complexes and fears. This article by Putin has more than 5 thousand words. So very soon you can reach 10 thousand words. They will not be accepted in Ukraine anyway. Ukraine expects only one thing from the Russian leader – the end of the war in Donbass, the fulfillment of its obligations and the real de-occupation of our territory.

I would like to recall a quote from Mayakovsky: “Comrade Muscovite, teeth are not rocks to Ukraine.” The feeling that Russia has no problems – people do not die from covid, the Chinese do not populate Siberia, and everything is just fine. Now is the time to think about what to do with Ukraine. The very fact of this writing is astounding. I would like to advise Monsieur Putin to change consultants. Firstly, we need to tackle our own problems, which, as far as I understand, are enough, and secondly, to change consultants, because some kind of beautiful story turns out about a very, very good Russia with the proviso that there were sad moments of printing bans and import of Ukrainian books from abroad, but it immediately turns out that in Poland this turned into an uprising and, in general, can be understood. And so such straight bunnies and babies, it’s a terrible thing, these Russians.
The moment is completely missed that when Khmelnitsky entered into an alliance with Moscow (and this was precisely an alliance), they proceeded from the fact that they swore allegiance to the Russian Tsar, and the Tsar swore allegiance to them in return, that is, it was an equal agreement between the two subjects, but in Moscow saw it differently and so it continued. It is strange that he did not hook Bandera, but Petliura and Mazepa got it, who are pitiful renegades and generally useless – they did not build the Lavra, and they did not mortgage academies, and in general they were terrible people, but with Russia everything was good, friendly and so just wonderful …
The only thing worth regretting is that Yuri Dolgoruky, who could not stay at home, went to the distant swamps and founded Moscow there, and now we are paying for it karmically. This is awful and insulting.
This article itself is a manifest. This is how Svyatoslav the Brave sent “Coming at you!” I have read this article and I understand that our generation will definitely not see the world. Commenting on the laws that another country adopts is called interference in internal affairs. And these Western forces, which, in the opinion of Pan Putin, are viciously oppressing Ukraine, these transcendental entities that are marking time in his head – something could be done about this. I do not know if there is a drug treatment for this, but they say that the droppers at the Sklifosovsky Institute are working. It’s creepy to read. This eerie text reminds us that the enemy is still at the gate and that what is happening now is just a lull, a stage of remission.
I think this is the text of a speech that was written to the actor Zelensky by screenwriter Putin. And he expects that this text will form the basis of Zelensky’s negotiating line, and it is, of course, sent there. In fact, there are two addressees for this article – Zelensky and Biden. And I think that any deviation from this outline, Monsieur Putin will consider a betrayal, and we know that revenge for the betrayal of Mr. Putin is always tough and, as he likes to argue, irreversible. I would strengthen the protection of the state border in Ukraine, especially considering that the part of it that was previously closed from Belarus is now essentially a border with Russia.
Konstantin Batozsky, political scientist and head of the Azov Sea Development Agency
At stake is Zelensky’s meeting with Biden. Next week, our president will fly to America and Vladimir Putin wants to fix his position as much as possible until this moment, so that in the process of negotiations the leaders of the two countries would appeal to this text. The heresy about the fact that Russians and Ukrainians are one people is a spit of tens of millions of Ukrainians. The majority of our population sincerely believes that we are different peoples. And the more Vladimir Putin insists on his version, absolutely spitting on the opinion of the majority of Ukrainians, the deeper he digs a hole between Russia and Ukraine, in which lies the war, occupation and annexation of Crimea, which today Ukraine is not ready to either forgive or forget or let go. Vladimir Putin and the Russian elite refuse to understand this, thereby betraying complete inadequacy. No matter what he writes for us, it means nothing. If they think they have surprised someone with the Ukrainian language, they are not surprised. If they think that someone will take it seriously, they will definitely not. All this heresy about one people alienates us, not brings us closer. So Vladimir Putin would go to ** d.
Ukrainians, who have been chopped off a piece of the country, who have experienced the war, cannot be bought by these conversations. Come on, bring your Vaneks here, we will cut them one by one. So what to do? Vladimir Putin must understand that there is such a mood in Ukraine that if he wants war, he will get it. This is a situation where a horrible end is better than an endless horror. It will be a very difficult walk for the Russian army. This will be the moment when Ukrainians will rally. He made a political nation out of a post-Soviet country with his own hands. The second war will consolidate this political nation forever and make our quilted jackets a persecuted minority, and the Russian army will not be greeted with bread and salt, but with great blood, because no one is happy with them.
We have already passed the war and we know how to fight. This is all perceived as a great insult, they say, “that there are these Ukrainians, their language is funny, so let’s write in their funny dialect, let them screw it up.” This is another confirmation of the absolutely chauvinistic attitude of the ruling elites in Russia towards Ukrainians who want to be Ukrainians, who were Russian-speaking and wanted to live their own lives, and instead got a war. I will never forgive Putin for what I went through. And I will tell my children so that they will never forgive. If Putin wants war, he will get it, but it is better to let his Vaneks drown in Afghanistan.
